Charles Lewandoski has proven himself to be one of the brightest young products of the racing ladder system to come along in years. The success that the 25-year-old has made for himself in the NASCAR weekly and touring series before his current post as driver for Tri-Star Motorsports in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Charles Lewandoski was born with racing in his blood. His father Donald had been involved in racing since he was a teenager himself, driving, owning, and sponsoring race cars throughout the Northeast. Donald Lewandoski's company, Lewandoski Construction, was brought to the national spotlight in the early 1990's as sponsor of ARCA Series Rookie of the Year Glenn Brewer's No. 10 Chevrolets. While continuing sponsorship of Brewer in the ARCA Series, Donald kept busy driving Legend cars at New England race tracks. In 1993, however, Charles decided to get behind the wheel of a race car, and so began the racing career of one of the up and coming stars of NASCAR.
Charles's driving career began in 1993 in Quarter Midgets at the Little T Speedway in Thompson, Connecticut. After a season of getting used to the quick Quarter Midgets, Charles showed signs of a promising future in 1994 several feature wins and finishing fourth in the final points standings at Little T. Charles racked up dozens of Quarter Midget checkered flags in six seasons. By 1999, Charles was ready to make a step up the racing ladder.
After a successful Quarter Midget career, Charles transitioned the from the Quarter Midget ranks to the dirt Sprint Cars at the quarter-mile Whip City Speedway in Westfield, Massachusetts. In 2001, Charles became the track's youngest ever feature winner in the Sprint Car division when he won his first of many Sprint Car A-main events. Before the 2002 season, Charles knew that in order to make it to the highest levels of NASCAR racing, he would have to move back to the asphalt and the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series.
The 2002 season saw Charles entering the Late Model division at the Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, a half-mile track just five minutes down the road from the Lewandoski house. Charles's rookie season behind the wheel of the No. 00 Chevrolet Monte Carlo exceeded the expectations of many in the local racing community, but Charles and the newly-formed Charles Lewandoski Racing team knew that they had the potential to accomplish great things in the Late Model division. Charles made history on August 9, 2002, when he became the youngest and the fastest driver to ever win a Late Model race at Stafford Speedway. In that historic event, Charles made a strong move on the final lap to win in just his 10th career start at the age of 17.
Charles made a major step in his racing career by stepping into the higher ranks of NASCAR as he transitioned to weekly track racing to the rigors of a touring schedule as part of the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series. Charles purchased a fleet of Busch Series cars from longtime family friend and team supporter Buckshot Jones that would become Charles's No. 01 Lewandoski Construction-sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlos in the Busch North Series in 2004.
Running a limited schedule in 2004 to get his feet wet in the Busch North ranks, Charles ended his first season in the series with three starts, two Rookie of the Race Awards, and also earned the prestigious PowerAde Power Move of the Race Award thanks to his season-high finish of 12th at the Waterford Speedbowl. Charles added to his on-track experience in 2004 through several test sessions on various circuits from quarter-mile short tracks to 1-mile speedways. He followed that up with another strong sophomore effort in 2005, where Lewandoski also competed in the top-10 in each of his starts in his limited schedule.
Charles spent much of 2007 and 2008 as a driver coach for Dale Earnhardt Inc., working primiarly with fourth-generation racer Jeffrey Earnhardt.
In 2008, Charles made his top-level debut in what was then known as the NASCAR Busch Series, now Nationwide Series at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He also made his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in 2009 at NHMS, as well.
Charles is a 2011 Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
